In 2001, Nami opened in the Minneapolis Warehouse District. That same year, Nami won "Best Design and Aesthetics" by the MSCA Retail association. Local papers had to say this:

Get This Woman a Drink! I agree with the author of the Nami review ("Fun with Butterfish," July 31). The restaurant is beautifully decorated--it raises the bar for sushi restaurants in Minneapolis .
